Home Tip of the Month

Check grading and drainage around your home

A very worthwhile late-April job is to walk around your house after a rainfall and see where the water is going.

What to do

  • Check that soil and garden beds slope away from the foundation
  • Make sure downspouts are pushing water away from the home
  • Look for pooling water near basement walls or walkways
  • Clear leftover leaves and debris from drainage areas

Why it matters

Spring melt and rain can expose drainage issues that were easy to miss during winter. Catching them early can help prevent moisture problems, protect the basement, and avoid small issues turning into bigger repairs later. It is one of those simple jobs that protects both comfort and long-term value.
